Hello Everyone,

Meeting number 8.  Getting close to the PASS Summit; this is the second last meeting before the summit.  If you have not been to a summit, I strongly encourage you to go.  There are so many smart people there and so much to learn.  The networking is amazing too.  So many good sponsors with interesting tools to demo and prizes and to have a drink with.

But on topic, the topic for meeting numebr 8 has been chosen.  It shall be:

How to Use Parameters like a Pro and Boost Performance

A presentation by Guy Glantser.

I have watched this presentation (not on my projector yet) and I think it is the direction I want our group to go in.  The Saskatoon SQL User Group I think will be a SQL Performance group, with the odd BI thing thrown in for variety.

It will be at 1:30 PM until 4:00 PM at the usual location in room 206.

Featured Presentation:

How to Use Parameters like a Pro and Boost Performance

Guy Glantser, CEO Madeira Data Solutions

Parameters are a fundamental part of T-SQL programming, whether they are used in stored procedures, dynamic statements, or ad hoc queries. Although widely used, most people aren't aware of the crucial influence parameters have on query performance. In fact, incorrect use of parameters is one of the common reasons for poor application performance. In this session, you learn about plan caching and how the Query Optimizer handles parameters. We talk about the pros and cons of parameter sniffing, as well as simple versus forced parameterization. But most important, we learn how to identify performance problems caused by poor parameter handling and we learn many techniques for solving these problems and boosting your application performance.
